YOU may recall the documentary film Super Size Me, in which movie maker Morgan Spurlock tackles the subject of obesity in the United States.

Fiat's own take on an expanding waistline comes in the shape of the 500L MPW, but with a more beneficial effect on your well-being - unless you happen to be occupying one of the two back row seats.

The initials stand for Multi Purpose Wagon, this latest twist on the 500L (for Large) coming with the choice of five or seven seats.

In the former configuration we're talking space to stretch your legs out plus estate car load capacity.

Opt for the people carrying mode and things are more constricted. In fact the back pair are only for kids, taking short journeys at that.

Basically the 500L MPW is a car you will either love or loathe. For instance stylish seating, a double glass sunroof and big windows to really let the light in make for a definite feelgood factor. On the other hand it's not what you would call cool.

A raised seating position that's even higher in the back ensures good all-round visibility though, and there are stowage trays on the front seat backs.

Also useful is a Fold & Tumble function which makes for a completely flat floor in the rear with one simple action.

Of a four-strong engine range - two petrol, two diesel - the higher powered of the diesels, the 1.6-litre MultiJet with 105bhp, is both strong and good for around 60mph.

It also means you get Start & Stop, Hill Holder to stop the car sliding back and a six-speed manual gearbox.

A pair of trim levels - Pop Star and Lounge - are up for grabs and include standard kit like air-con, cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, touchscreen info system with Uconnect, six airbags and rear parking sensors.
