THERE is something about GT models that inspires anticipation and excitement - and Peugeot's 508 is no exception.

Featuring 19-inch ‘Capella' alloy wheels the exterior is streamlined and dynamic with a single ‘floating' grille and stylish headlamps making for an eye-catching front end - while the rear's star performers are three red ‘claws' which mask the lights.

The leather trimmed interior boasts a simple yet elegant style deploying a host of cutting-edge technologies such as a colour head-up display for the driver and quad-zone air conditioning, as well as keyless entry, push-button ignition and parking sensors.

There's an attention to detail on the GT model inspiring the belief that the French have come up with a classy offering.

For a car intent on being a smooth cruiser the comfort of its occupants must be paramount if it is to have a chance of attracting buyers through the showroom door.

So this 508 offers ample space with heads, legs and shoulders all easily accommodated within the GT's generous dimensions - while little in the way of exterior noise makes its way into the cabin easing the wear and tear of long motorway journeys.

Opening up the bootlid via the natty key fob reveals a large boot allowing 545 litres luggage to be squirrelled away.

The rear seat backs also fold in one easy movement to form a handy flat floor extending the capacity to 1,581 litres when more space is required. There are plenty of cubby holes dotted around providing a home for the numerous odds and sods family motoring inevitably attracts.

Life behind the wheel is pleasant thanks to a supportive seat that can be moved easily into a comfortable position. The steering wheel likewise can be shifted to suit and is festooned with buttons controlling essentials like the audio system.

The GT is fitted with the range's most powerful engine - a 2.2-litre diesel beauty. It is married to a six-speed automatic transmission which is as smooth as melted chocolate and just as tasty when it comes to shifting this 508 from a standing start to 62mph in a shade over eight seconds.

The carbon footprint is reduced by clever technology which means despite offering 200bhp the engine's emissions are relatively low.

The ride is excellent, helped by precise steering and the GT model's sophisticated drop link dual wishbone front axle - which in layman's terms means it is sharper to drive thanks to enhanced road holding that matches the engine's dynamic performance.

Safety is similarly top notch with the GT boasting stability control as well as front, side and curtain airbags as well as hill assist allowing Euro NCAP to give it a five-star rating.

There are plenty of goodies thrown in with four electric windows to play with as well as satellite navigation and cruise control.

The GT isn't cheap at a shade over £30,000, but for that you get a big family car that offers super styling, a powerful engine and a quality cabin in a package that looks and feels anything but run of the mill.
