MY first drive in the little Chrysler Ypsilon was huge fun but that was the more expensive 1.3 diesel and the standard 1.2 petrol would be a better buy second-hand.
The Ypsilon is a Lancia in other markets, but like the Delta launched at the same time, the merge of the Fiat group with Chrysler has brought about a name change for Britain.
It's based on the same chassis as the Fiat 500 and the Ford Ka, but with a longer wheelbase to accommodate five doors instead of three, and a little more interior space.
Petrol engines are 1.2-litre with 68bhp and the 875cc TwinAir with 83bhp while the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel has 95bhp.
Both the TwinAir engine and the diesel offer emissions of 99 grams per kilometre which means they escape road tax.
They are also the best performers, but all are reasonably quiet with excellent economy.
The ride is comfortable, the handling and road holding safe and fun and the whole car feels very good on the road.
The driving position is not perfect for tall drivers like me because there's no column reach adjustment but there is enough space for a couple of child seats in the back.
Equipment includes start/stop, aircon, Bluetooth, 60/40 split fold back seat, alloys, electric windows and mirrors and loads of airbags.
