THE Skoda Yeti arrived back in 2009 and was an immediate success due to its practicality and keen pricing.

It was recently subjected to a substantial facelift and now enjoys sharper and more elegant looks.

The biggest part of the revamp was the introduction of two distinct versions, the normal Yeti and the Yeti Outdoor, both available in a choice of four trim levels; S, SE, Elegance and the range-topping Laurin & Klement.

While the Yeti retains its shape, a revised grille and bonnet combined with body-coloured bumpers and stylish alloys help to give it a more modern look.

The two-wheel-drive Yeti retains its car-like feel and handling and in any spec represents good value for money with a starting price of £16,600.

Rugged underbody protection and plastic wheelarches give the Yeti Outdoor a tougher off-roader look and the Haldex 4x4 system  means that it is very capable on the rough stuff.

The sophisticated Haldex clutch provides maximum traction at all times and the lighter 4x4 unit means new versions are more economical than before.

Changes inside are fairly minimal but the SE version tested comes complete with loads of standard kit. There is a new steering wheel, new fabrics and revised trim and the switchgear and controls are all well-placed and easily read.

The SE includes 17-inch alloys, leather multi-function steering wheel,an alarm, extra speakers, cruise control, curtain airbags, driver and passenger side and front airbags, a driver knee airbag and dual-zone air conditioning.

In addition you also get electric windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, front fog lights, headlight washers, ISOFIX child seat fittings, rear parking sensors, a trip computer and Bluetooth. The Columbus satnav system is an option at £1,630, while metallic paint adds another £525.

The Outdoor also features all the latest safety equipment and driver aids and at £21,915 for the SE 2.0-litre TDI 4x4 as tested represents superb value for money.

The Varioflex seating system is simple to use and versatile and allows three rear seats to be individually folded or removed completely. The boot provides 416-litres of space and this rises to 1,580 when the back seats are folded.

The Outdoor provides an excellent driving position and good driving dynamics. It is surprisingly agile and offers superb grip and sharp steering that puts many of its Crossover rivals to shame.

The willing diesel is good for a top speed of 118mph and tackles the sprint to 62mph in 9.9 seconds. It is also frugal and I got  very close to the combined 48.7mpg figure.

At home in urban traffic, the Outdoor is also happy cruising at motorway speeds and is more than capable on challenging terrain or when dealing with nasty weather.

I enjoyed my time with the Yeti Outdoor and it is easy to understand why it has become a firm favourite with family car buyers.
