THE latest Renault Twingo is a real departure with rear engine and rear wheel drive.
But the previous model is more grown up and sophisticated than most city cars and more powerful models are a hoot to drive.
It seats four and it has a very good ride in all but the top Renaultsport model, soaking up the worst road surfaces as well as the best cars in the class.
There are 60 and 75bhp versions of the company's 1.2-litre engine available, and a GT with a turbo that puts out 100bhp.
The Renaultsport has that harsh ride but comes with a 1.6 engine and 130-plus horses to give excellent performance.
The 75bhp is the best of the bunch combining decent performance with excellent road holding and grip while still retaining good comfort.
This is a small car I would be happy to live with. It feels much bigger than it is, with refinement which is up to the best superminis.
The central digital display is not to all tastes and the stereo buttons are too small, but the driving position is good for most and all the controls are light.
