RENAULT'S first real 4x4 was the Koleos, a fine driving soft roader that is quite capable in the rough as long as you buy one with four-wheel-drive.

It was only on sale here between 2008 and 2010 and for most owners the two wheel drive models will be more than adequate.

These look the same as those withfour-wheel-driveand will be cheaper to run.

The Koleos is based on the Nissan X-Trail and it drives very easily. Thetwo-wheel-drivemodels are two seconds quicker to 60 miles an hour because of lighter weight.

There is just one engine - the 2.0-litre turbo 150bhp diesel from the Laguna - which is quite man enough for the weight as well as being smooth, quiet and economical.

The ride is comfortable and refinement is good, with the only wind intrusion from the roof rails - as usual.

There is more roll that I would have expected in the corners but it clings on well.

The clutch is heavier than most and although the steering is light and easy at low speeds, it doesn't give the driver much feedback.
