SMALL diesel-powered hatchbacks are not all that common in the UK.

The extra price of the car, plus the extra cost of diesel at the pump means that unless you are going to cover some serious mileage, it probably isn't worth it. But if you do clock up a hefty mileage and you are going for the long haul, it is a worthy consideration.

The recently refreshed Volkswagen Polo offers a diesel option in its engine range, a 1.4-litre, three-cylinder turbo unit with two power outputs - 73 and 88bhp - although they account for only around ten per cent of British sales. Volkswagen hope to build on those numbers.

This car was fitted with the larger oil-burner in top spec SEL trim. It costs a fairly hefty £17,400 but you do get a lot for your money.

It's not as much fun to drive as the class-leading Ford Fiesta but no-one can question its superb build quality.

While 88bhp and 169lb/ft of torque doesn't sound all that much, it is more than adequate to pull away strongly from traffic lights and to overtake with confidence. Getting from zero to 62mph takes 10.9 seconds. Top speed is 114mph.

Officially the Polo is supposed to return an average 83.1mpg but the reality was between 60 and 65mpg in a week of mixed driving.

The car is fitted with a softish suspension which means it's pretty easy to drive and comfortable over potholes. It's most at home in the city and where its compact size makes it easy to park. But there is enough oomph to make it a competent performer on the motorway or along twisty country roads where it proved to be very agile.

The diesel engine can be quite clattery, but it does quieten down on the open road - though a sixth gear would help when cruising. Wind and road noise is kept at bay and there is very little vibration from the engine.

Interior space is good with lots of head and legroom and there is lots of storage space. Seats in the front are quite large and comfortable but three adults in the back would be a crush.

The Polo has an upmarket feel with solid-feeling switchgear and soft-touch plastics on the dashboard.

Few, if any of the Polo's rivals can match its simple, ergonomic cabin layout. It has large dials, clear instruments and easy-to-use switches. It also has a large colour touch-screen system that is very intuitive to use.

The steering wheel and driver's seat both have an ample amount of adjustment and all-round visibility is excellent.
