Audi A5 hard to beat
THE Audi A5 is available as a beautiful three door coupe, a more practical five door Sportback and as a stunning cabriolet that's one of the best looking open cars on the market.
Like all Audis, it's beautifully built and very well appointed. It comes in standard, SE, Sport, S line and Black Edition trims, with a huge and very confusing range of engine and gearbox options.
Many were company cars new, and so come with either 140 or 170bhp 2.0-litre turbo diesel power, but there is also a 3.0-litre V6 TDI.
Petrol options are a 1.8 with 170bhp, a 2.0-litre with up to 225, and a 3.2 V6 with 330, and there are no less than three different automatic gearbox options.
Those with sports suspension are to be avoided if you can. They spoil the car's otherwise excellent ride, for no gain in roadholding or handling, which is excellent in all.
The cabin is beautifully appointed even in standard trim, and most secondhand cars will have had extra added by the original owners.
Rear legroom is tight for adults but fine for children and there are only two rear seats and seatbelts. The sat nav has loads of functions but is far too complicated to operate.
Pay around £11,000 for an '09 09-reg standard trim with start stop, or £20,500 for a '12 12-reg S-Line auto.
