CARS like Nissan's electric Leaf almost certainly show us the future for the time when the oil runs out.
But for the moment they are too limited. The Leaf is supposed to have a range of 90 miles, but when I drove it in best economy mode, the range shown on a full battery was 68 miles.
After just three miles driving, this was down to 45. If that's enough for you to do most of your journeys, then it's right for you.
The Leaf is just like an ordinary automatic five door hatch to drive, with excellent acceleration, a good ride, sticky road holding and strong grip.
A fill up of electricity costs pence, but on a domestic supply, that takes eight hours.
However, you can get 80% charge on a fast charger, while you have a coffee and the standard sat nav tells you where charging stations are all over the country.
