THIS Kia's name sounds the same as a famous Premier League football manager - but unlike Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, the recently refreshed Venga SR7 is not in the least bit annoying - indeed it plays a bit of a blinder.
Having spent many seasons in the madcap world of telephone number transfer fees and players' salaries I'm sure the Gunners' boss would appreciate Kia's success in proving you don't need to splash massive amounts of cash to get a practical car that - for a family - represents a great addition to the team.
Kia has developed the Venga as a small car with lots of space - a supermini MPV if you will although for some reason this description tends to bring executives of the Korean company out in a rash.
The reality is the car does take its exterior styling cues from the supermini sector while offering the upright driving position and ease of access of a typical MPV.
There is also bundles of space in the cabin and a rear seat that split folds and slides forward a few inches when you need extra boot room. The luggage area also sports useful under-floor stowage as well as a securing net and hooks for shopping bags.
The exterior avoids the boxy look of some competitors and offers nice touches like the swept back headlights and natty chrome grille.
It has benefited from a recent midlife revamp which has avoided anything too radical - rather sticking to a formula of refreshing fixtures and fittings to keep the Venga looking and feeling modern.
Body-coloured door mirrors and bumpers are pleasing on the eye with the SR7 model - which sits between the ‘1 Air' and ‘2' trim grades (there are also ‘3' and ‘4' models available) - getting 16-inch alloy wheels and either the 1.4-litre diesel engine under the bonnet of the car I tested or a 1.4-litre petrol power unit which is £1,300 cheaper.
The oil burner saves you money on fuel though and offers more pulling power accessed through the six-speed manual gearbox - while the petrol makes do with just the five.
The SR7 also comes with a number of goodies including air conditioning, electrically adjustable door mirrors, electric windows, automatic headlight control and privacy glass on the rear windows and tailgate in addition to reversing sensors, Bluetooth, USB and AUX ports. As with other Kias the Venga gets a top-notch seven-year warranty.
Kia has installed a raft of safety gizmos including stability control and front, side and curtain airbags as well as active anti-whiplash head restraints.
The Venga is neat and tidy to drive but, with a 0-62mph time slightly quicker than a sloth, it won't set your hair on fire. The suspension is firm, but not uncomfortably so, and has the benefit of making the car surprisingly agile on tight country lanes.
