MOST 4x4s are expensive to run alongside a similar sized car because they have so much extra weight to drag around and they are about as aerodynamic as a garden shed.
If you really need a 4x4, but don't fancy the big bills, why not drop down a size and try the Daihatsu Terios.
It is the only small 4x4 with five doors as standard making it more practical than others and at a squeeze, it will seat five.
It has excellent off-road ability and in a group test some years ago, it kept up with a Land Rover Discovery over most tough terrain.
From 2006, it had a 1.5 petrol engine - there's no diesel option sadly - with fair performance.
It's also comfortable with good steering and road manners. There is some roll, but road holding is still quite reasonable.
And permanent four wheel drive is always there to help out in slippery conditions on road as well as off.
Interior quality is good and Daihatsus' have a strong reputation for reliability. The Terios comes with air con, remote locking and four electric windows.
