A PLUG-IN version of the BMW 5 Series will be on stream by the spring of 2017 with a theoretical fuel economy of more than 140 miles per gallon.

The 530e will use a 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor to produce a combined output of 252bhp.

It will be able to run for up almost 30 miles as a zero emission electric vehicle while its 0 to 60 acceleration is rated at 6.2 seconds with a maximum of 155mph.

Emissions of 46g/km and a starting price from £43,985 are likely to see it in sizeable demand from executive drivers.

BMW says the 530e iPerformance has a range of nearly 400 miles in real-world driving and is capable of covering distances of up to 29 miles purely on electric power at a maximum speed of 87mph.

It is rear wheel drive and fitted with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard.

With a lithium-ion battery pack slung below the back seats, boot capacity is reduced from 520 litres in the standard 5 Series saloon to 410 litres in the 530e.

The official fuel return is 141.2mpg making the 530e the most efficient 5 Series to date.

A multi-mode drive programme allows the car to get the best from its hybrid power set up and the 530e can be fully recharged in under five hours from a domestic supply.

That can be reduced to around three hours using a BMW supplied charger.

Styling cues to denote the 530e's eco status include blue slats in the grille and on the wheel hubs while the charging point is located aft of the front wheel arch on the near side of the vehicle.

New technology onboard includes semi-automated driving systems enabling the driver to set a variable speed limit when using the optional active cruise control and advanced lane safety devices.

On the connectivity front, BMW is now the first car maker to offer Microsoft Office 365 users a secure server connection for exchanging and editing emails, calendar entries and contact details via a built-in Microsoft Exchange function.

The system also allows for appointments to be imported straight into the navigation system and telephone numbers on the Office 365 address book - or within meeting invites or email text - can be dialled directly.

The 530e is the sixth plug-in hybrid to be introduced by BMW and follows on from the BMW X5 xDrive40e, BMW 225xe, BMW 330e, BMW 740e and the BMW 740Le xDrive.
