WANT a compact crossover with a big-car feel - then get in the Q2.

Audi's baby SUV is a beauty with top-notch technology normally the preserve of much larger vehicles.

The Q2 may be the German car maker's first go at a small sports utility vehicle, but with a track record of producing high-class motors it was never going to be a dud.

Indeed Audi's newest member of the fast-expanding ‘Q' family is a multi-media nerd's delight aimed at enticing younger buyers.

There's a link allowing your smartphone to become part of the car, wireless charging to ensure nothing runs flat and up to three information displays if you extend the budget to include the optional head up system.

Also on the options menu is a Technology pack which at first glance may seem expensive at £1,395 when you have already shelled out just shy of £27,000 for the Sport model.

But don't be put off as it gives you access to the 12.3-inch multi-mode high definition Virtual Cockpit digital dash display which replaces the normal instrument panel.

This is a delight as the driver gets a technicolour treat full of useful information while the centre of the dash still has room for a simple display screen that can also feature sat nav directions.

The driver gets to choose what is displayed and where allowing the technology to be personalised to your heart's content.

This also applies to the interior as there are different colour choices available for various bits and bobs as well as variable shades of ambient lighting in the evening.

Comfortable and supportive sports-style seats not normally found in a compact crossover complete an appealing cabin that offers plenty of room for four adults.

Practicality is assured by a large 405-litre luggage area which can be expanded to 1,050 litres by folding the rear seats - with the boot floor able to be raised slightly to give a flat floor.

There are lots of cubby holes and handy cup holders as well as good-sized door bins.

The exterior offers plenty of kerb appeal thanks to smooth lines, good use of contrasting colours and natty alloys. Be aware though that as the wheels get larger you use more juice and pollution increases.

Emissions and average fuel consumption with the optional 18-inch wheels fitted here changes from 119g/km and 54.3mpg on 16 and 17-inch rims to 123g/km and 52.3mpg.

Thanks to Audi's usual polish the Q2 is a refined beast to drive with good responses from the 1.4-litre petrol engine allowing 62mph to be reached from a standing start in 8.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 131mph.

Spirited performance is one thing, but when pootling around town Audi's Cylinder On Demand system can temporarily deactivate two of the four cylinders by closing their valves ensuring fuel efficiency remains at an optimum.

The ride is comfortable thanks to an efficient suspension soaking up most of the punishment handed out by our pothole-ridden roads while the handling is sharp and sure-footed thanks to good levels of grip and well-weighted, informative steering.
