MERCEDES have opened the order books for the company's most powerful oil-burning G-Class off-roader to date - but buyers will have to wait until the summer for delivery.
Costing from £94,000, the new G 350 d is powered by a three-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It's the most powerful diesel engine ever to have been fitted to a G-Class and it endows the rugged rough-rider with a 0 to 62 mph time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph.
As well as a performance edge, it is capable of up to 29.4 mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 252 g/km of CO depending on wheel size.
The G 350 d comes as standard with 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light alloy wheels, LED high performance headlights, a mirror package including electrically adjustable and heated wing mirrors, leather seats, a 12.3-inch cockpit and media displays, ambient lighting with a choice of eight colours, AMG bodystyling, electrically adjustable heated front seats with memory function, heated rear seats, an assistance package which includes blind spot and active lane keeping and distance assist functions, keyless starting function and automatic three-zone climate control.
As ever, a number of option packages are available costing from £1,700 for the largely cosmetic ‘Night' package up to £5,995 for the ‘Premium' pack which adds an intelligent light system, adaptive air suspension, an upgraded sound system, interior air ionisation, ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours, a sliding sunroof and a parking package with 360 camera.
A further £2,995 will get you a rear entertainment package which turns the back seat into a virtual cinema with two 10-inch touchscreen displays, a digital TV tuner, integral media player; and internet access.
