AMG, the Mercedes-Benz performance division, has waved its wand over the new GLE to produce an awesome 435hp flagship version of the SUV which will sprint to 62mph in only 5.3seconds and go on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
AMG's distinctive 15-bar grille differentiates the GLE 53 4Matic+ from other fourth-generation GLE models along with a new front bumper with larger air intakes, body-coloured wheel-arch extensions and a model-specific rear apron with a chromed diffuser and chromed tailpipes.
Under the skin there's a mild-hybrid powertrain, fully variable all-wheel-drive, a nine-speed automatic transmission and active ride control air suspension.
The electrified three-litre, in-line, six-cylinder engine comes with twin-turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor delivering maximum torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and additionally feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system.
Inside there are red colour accents galore. The AMG Performance steering wheel in black Nappa leather has red contrasting top stitching and a red 12-o'clock marking while the seats are trimmed in microfibre and what Mercedes calls ‘man-made' leather - in black with red stitching. UK models will have a foldable third row of seats as standard.
AMG-specific features and displays can be found in the touchscreen multi-media display and instrument cluster. And there's even an exclusive interior fragrance named "AMG#63". According to the company, the specially developed niff is "an inspiring, sporty scent to match the spirit of the performance sports car brand."
Fuller spec details and prices will be revealed nearer to the car's arrival in UK showrooms.
