THE first mainstream model from all-electric brand Polestar will be a Tesla-rivalling fastback with a single charge range of more than 300 miles.
The Polestar 2 is being displayed at the Geneva Motor Show and is due to be on the road in the UK next year.
With a guide price starting from around £34,000 excluding any Government subsidy Polestar says it will be introducing its new car in high specification form priced from around £51,000.
Polestar is an all-electric vehicle company set up in 2017 by Volvo and its Chinese owners Geely and its cars are being built in China.
The Polestar 2 will compete with the Tesla Model 3 and the company says its pricing strategy is designed to broaden the audience for electric performance cars.
With two electric motors and a 78kWh bettery the five-seat Polestar 2 is said to have a 0 to 60mph acceleration time of less than five seconds.
And to highlight the technology role that Polestar plays within the Volvo Car Group, the Polestar 2 is one of the first cars in the world to embed an infotainment system powered by Android.
The system allows for apps and vehicle functions to coexist and brings embedded Google services to a car for the first time - including the Google Assistant, Google Maps with support for electric vehicles and the Google Play Store.
Natural voice control and a new 11-inch touch screen display bring the new Android set up to life inside the car.
Design-led features include pixel LED headlights and proximity lighting which enable a special welcome sequence, Polestar's signature frameless side mirrors and an illuminated Polestar logo, which is reflected onto the car's panoramic glass roof.
Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar's chief executive officer, said: "Polestar 2 is our first fully electric car and first volume model. Everything about it has been designed and engineered with passion and dedication. As an electric performance brand, and through the forthcoming launch of a portfolio of fully electric cars, Polestar is determined to address the world's air quality challenges. Polestar delivers electric performance cars that are great to own and drive."
The company's first model, the Polestar 1, was sold only in limited numbers and the new car will be available only online.
Production of Polestar 2 is slated to start in early 2020 in both left and right-hand drive.
