COMETH the hour, cometh the car.No sooner had the latest top-of-the-range S-Class SUV arrived in my driveway from Mercedes than the weather window closed in.

Driving rain, high winds, snow blizzards, hail, all engulfed my home, my driveway and the big black beast in obsidian black metallic paint with black leather upholstery.

I looked out my window and thought, ‘Maybe I'll go for a drive.' That's the kind of confidence a car like this inspires in you.

It's not cheap - with the off-road pack on it, this car comes in at £85,415 - but my goodness it has everything to keep you and your family safe.

And as one by one bridges across Scotland were closed, I noted that this car even has a Crosswind Assist function alongside trailer stabilisation.

To be frank, the only option on it was the off-road package coming in at £1,495 but offering downhill speed regulation, driving modes including off-road and off-road+, fully variable all-wheel drive and low range transmission and inter axle locking.

This is a big seven seater, Mercedes-Benz's largest and most luxurious SUV. It has a long wheelbase offering even greater comfort, a second row of adjustable seats and a third row of seats when lowered gives a boot space of 2,400 litres which is massive.

While you can appreciate this as a family car, it is also the go-to car for those - see A-list celebs - for moments when they want the best security with the style that always marks out Mercedes.

So this car has a rear seat entertainment system - you watch the movies while the driver, well drives and all of the functions on the touchscreen can be controlled from the rear - do not let the kids know this.

It is a big car but with so many helpful driver assistance packages onboards, it eases you through what I thought were some ridiculous situations like narrow parking spaces, it is not more difficult to park than a small city car due to all the aid onboard. You just have to find the space.It will get you in no bother. Trust me.

It drives smoothly and efficiently - and by that I mean you can almost treat it like a small, nippy car. It pushes forward when you want and I was absolutely hoping to come to a road jam that meant I could only use the four wheel drive off-road to get out - but to no avail.

This is one of the most all-encompassing cars I have ever driven. It has something to tackle every situation and get you out of it.
