A NEW plug-in hybrid is joining the Audi stable in the shape of the A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e.

With an electric range of up to 41 miles the car uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine backed up by an electric motor to develop a combined 204ps.

Top speed is a claimed 141mph and the car has a 0 to 60 acceleration time of 7.6 seconds while officially it is rated at 282.5mpg with emissions of 31g/km.

The plug-in A3 is priced from £33,060 and joins Audi's range of PHEVs which include the A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7.

Fully electric travel is possible in the A3 at speeds of up to 87mph and the car can be completely recharged in around four hours. The recharging point is concealed behind a flap on the nearside front wing.

As a result of the electrification of the A3 Sportback, boot space is reduced by 100 litres to 280 litres.
