HYUNDAI has announced its new small SUV will be called the Bayon and it will be a model that is out to rival the likes of the Nissan Juke and Volkswaen T-Roc.

Smaller than its current baby SUV, the Kona, the Bayon is a completely new model that will be joining Hyundai's larger SUVs in Europe.

As well as the Kona, those are the Tucson, Nexo and the Santa Fe.

The Korean car maker says the name Bayon was inspired by the city of Bayonne in the southwest of France and as the car is primarily a European product, Hyundai decided to name it after a European city.

Details of the new model are sketchy at the moment and the only image shows the Bayon name and the rear light cluster.

Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai's vice president of marketing and product, said:. "Hyundai is strongly established in the European SUV market already, in terms of our model range as well as our sales success.

"By launching a new, additional B-segment model as the entry point into our SUV line-up, we see a great opportunity to cover European customers' demand even better and to increase our offering in a highly popular segment."

During the past 20 years Hyundai has taken inspiration from locations around the world to name its SUVs. The Tucson and Santa Fe are named after cities in the states of Arizona and New Mexico respectively, and the Kona is named after the Kona district on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Nexo fuel-cell electric vehicle takes its name from the similarly named town on the Danish holiday island of Bornholm.

Hyundai says it plans to release the Bayon in the first half of 2021.
