A PETROL plug-in model is joining the Volkswagen Arteon fastback line up with the arrival of an eHybrid version priced from £39,905.

Powered by a 1.4-litre turbo engine linked to an electric motor it develops 218ps which results in a 0 to 60 acceleration time of 7.8 seconds and a maximum of 138mph.

Fuel economy data is still to be released but VW says the car will have an electric-only range of up to 39 miles at speeds of up to 80mph.

The new eHybrid can be charged in five hours using a domestic three-pin plug reducing to 3hrs 33mins when using 3.6kW AC charger.

Energy can also be recovered while driving using a programmable function via the infotainment system to conserve battery power.

The plug-in powertrain will be available in both the fastback and the estate versions of the Arteon with the latter priced from £40,705.

Emissions are rated from 26g/km for the fastback and 27g/km for the shooting brake in Elegance trim.

Higher specification R-Line versions are also available priced from £40,685 and £41,485 respectively with slightly higher emissions of 31 and 32g/km.
