AN updated version of the Mazda CX-5 will be on the road next year as the Japanese car maker goes about improving its popular SUV.

It will be the first model to come with Mazda's new intelligent drive system which enables the driver to select the most appropriate set up with one touch of a switch.

Mazda's next generation of SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture is also being used on the 2022 CX-5, further evolving the bodyshell, suspension and seats to improve ride comfort and reduce fatigue.

Road noise has also been greatly reduced, particularly when driving on rough surfaces such as gravel.

Some 4x4 model grades equipped with Mazda's i-Activ AWD system further benefit from an Off-Road Mode, which makes driving feel more natural on un-made and slippery surfaces.

Externally, the car gets a new-look grille and front wind design while the front and rear lamp clusters have also been restyled.

New trim levels are also being introduced with the three model line up now being called Newground, Sport Black and GT Sport.

The interior of the 2022 CX-5 now comes with a wireless phone charging tray in the centre console and changes in the boot see the two-piece, reversible loadspace floorboard and the tailgate sill at same level to aid loading.

An updated range of safety systems now includes cruising and traffic support which helps reduce driver fatigue by assisting with accelerator, brake pedal and steering operations when stuck in traffic.

Prices will be announced later in the year.
