SUBARU has revealed its first battery electric vehicle which it has developed in conjunction with Toyota.

The Solterra will be launched in 2022 and like Toyota's bZ4x it will be a mid-size SUV with a full charge range of up to 330 miles.

Details remain sketchy but Subaru has confirmed the Solterra will be available with two powertrains, both using a 71.4kWh battery pack.

The first is a single motor which develops 201bhp and the second has two motors driving both axles which has 215bhp and a range of up to 285 miles.

At 4.69 metres long it is about the same size as Subaru's Forester and will have an 80 per cent recharge time of around 30 minutes.

Like the bZ4x the Soltera features a state of the art interior with a digital instrument panel and a large central display in the middle of the dash.

Subaru says that the Solterra will offer drivers the brand's "enjoyment and peace of mind" of its other SUVs and that the electric vehicle will be capable of handling tougher road conditions.

The Solterra is due for official release around the middle of 2022 and further details will be announced in the next few months.
