THE current Mazda3 arrived back in the spring of 2019 and the family hatchback made a huge impact.

The model's superb looks set a new standard in the compact car sector as did its use of premium materials and clever technology.

The combination led to numerous awards from the automotive world and in typical Mazda style the company has continued to make it even more desirable.

You can now buy the Mazda3 with the Skyactiv-X powerplant- the world's first production petrol unit to use compression ignition - which means it is much leaner than conventional engines but still provides more power and better fuel efficiency.

It delivers its power smoothly and quietly and is capable of up to 60mpg on longer journeys and combined with Mazda's slick gearbox it provides excellent entertainment.

With its eye-catching good looks and superb driving dynamics the Mazda 3 stands out from the crowd. There is much to admire in its contoured lines, sloping roof, tinted windows, stylish alloys and twin tail pipes that combine to give the car its sporting look.

The cabin too is a work of art that oozes class thanks to its use of top quality materials mixed with all the latest technology.

Equipment includes a large infotainment screen angled towards the driver, full smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, a superb Bose sound system, A DAB radio, sat nav, air conditioning and climate control. A neat rotary controller also means you don't have to fiddle with too many buttons.

The new engine means the Mazda3 is no slouch and it can reach 62mph from a standing start in just 8.1 seconds before going on to a top speed of 134mph.

You don't have to get all the clever engine technology just enjoy the ride. There is always lots of power available and like all Mazdas this car delivers the fun factor and rewards enthusiastic drivers.

The handling and ride are superb and this 3 is quiet and refined even at high speeds. Sure the suspension is a little on the firm side but that means the car goes round corners with ease.

There is enough room for four adults to travel in comfort and the hatchback is also very practical with a 351 litre boot which can be expanded by dropping the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. The cabin also offers lots of storage space and cup holders.

As you would expect the Mazda3 features all the latest safety equipment and driver aids which are too numerous to list here.
