THE glamour and glitz of Monaco's super-rich may not be something you'd necessarily associate with Skoda - but the name Monte Carlo is indelibly stamped on the Czech company's sporting history.

Inspired by the brand's numerous motorsport successes at the legendary rally, going back to 1936 when the Skoda Popular took second placesporty-looking Monte Carlo variants of the Fabia have contributed to the hatchback's success for more than a decade.

Now Skoda has revealed the latest Fabia Monte Carlo, built, like the rest of the new, fourth-generation Fabia range, on the Volkswagen Group's MQB-A0 modular platform with a choice of a triple-cylinder one-litre engine or a four-cylinder 1.5TSI, with power outputs of 110 PS and 150 PS respectively.

The one-litre is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed DSG auto while the 1.5 comes exclusively with the DSG transmission.

With a top speed of 139mph and 0-60mph sprint time of just under eight seconds for the 1.5 litre version, the Monte Carlo is swift enough but is hardly going to set the rally stages alight. However, this flagship Fabia boasts a distinctively sporty presence with black detailing on the grille and wing mirrors, model-specific front and rear aprons, a black rear diffuser and black alloy wheels with a diameter of 17 to 18 inches.

The black theme continues inside with red detailing on the seats, dashboard, centre console and door handles along with carbon fibre-look trim on the front door armrests and lower dashboard.

Standard fittings include sports seats with integrated headrests, multi-function leather sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedal covers, LED ambient lighting, an eight-inch infotainment display and a 10.25-inch customisable digital display which, exclusively for the Monte Carlo, offers a specific, more dynamic background for the layouts.

Full UK specifications and prices are yet to be revealed.
