MAZDA's first ever full self-charging hybrid model, the new Mazda2 Hybrid, will go on sale at UK dealerships in May with prices starting from £20,300.

While it's a brand-new car for Mazda, potential buyers can be forgiven for thinking that it looks mightily familiar. Hardly surprising, for this Mazda is actually a rebadged version of the latest Toyota Yaris Hybrid and is built by Toyota.

Combining a 1,490cc 92ps three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59kW electric motor, the new model is the latest outcome of a long-standing collaboration between Mazda and Toyota.

In the UK, the Hybrid will be sold alongside the distinctively different seven-model 2022 Mazda2 line-up which is powered by the established 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, Skyactiv-G petrol engine.

Three versions of the Hybrid will be available - Pure, Agile and Select - each boasting a combined power output of 116ps driven via a CVT automatic transmission. They will accelerate from 0-60mph in less than 9.7 seconds while returning a WLTP combined cycle fuel economy of between 70.6 and 74.3mpg and CO emissions of just 93-87g/km depending on whether 16" or 15" wheels are specified.

The Pure grade model comes with electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, powered windows, rain sensing wipers, automatic high beam, seven-inch colour touchscreen, climate control aircon, dynamic cruise control and lane assist.

Priced from £21,150 the Agile grade adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera,8-inch colour touch-screen centre display and smart keyless entry while the top-of-the range, £23,610 Select model comes with an extensive range of additional equipment including privacy glass, 16-inch alloys, power-fold mirrors, Qi Wireless smartphone charging and blind spot monitoring with parking support function.

Meanwhile, the recently updated 2022 Mazda2 comes with new trim levels and improved efficiency across the range with Mazda's 115ps version of the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine reintroduced alongside the 75ps and 90ps outputs.

There are seven models in a range which starts with the £16,575 75ps SE-L and is topped by the new £20,945 115ps GT Sport Tech model. Standard spec across the entire range includes navigation, cruise control, integrated Bluetooth and climate-control air conditioning.
