A NEW look is coming to the Hyundai Kona small SUV with the unveiling of an EV-derived, futuristic design for a new generation model.

At 4.355 metres long the new Kona EV is some 150mm longer than the current car.

Hyundai says the upscaled Kona will be available in four variants - all-electric, hybrid electric, internal combustion engine and a sporty N Line, with a universal architecture for all and individual styling for each.

Taking some of its lines from the current Ioniq EV line-up, the new Kona is also 25mm wider and has a wheelbase that is 60mm longer than before.

"Upscaled with Kona's unique character, the all-new KONA confidently expresses its bold and dynamic presence," said SangYup Lee, executive vice president and head of the Hyundai Design Centre. "Kona has evolved in every respect to embrace an even wider range of diversity, to become a true lifestyle supporter."

The new model started with the EV variant design which was then adapted the design for the ICE, HEV and N Line models.

The car also features a seamless band of lights across the nose and tail which are pixelated on the EV variant - the first Hyundai to do so.

Other features include sculpted wheel arch cladding that incorporates headlamps and taillamps and angular cuts to the body design similar to the Ioniq 5.

The Kona EV has pixel graphic details on the intake grille and rear bumper, a pixel-inspired 19-inch alloy wheel design, black embracing line and optional black side mirrors and roof.

The ICE and HEV share a bold and rugged bumper and skid plate design, and black wheel arch cladding.

The N Line comes with optional black side mirrors and roof, wing-type spoiler, more aggressive front and rear designs with wing-shaped bumper to emphasise a lower stance, twin exhausts and silver side skirt.

Hyundai says it will be releasing more details about the new Kona in the coming months.
