KIA is to expand its EV line-up of electric vehicles and has revealed an EV5 medium-sized SUV which will sit alongside the current EV6 and EV9 models.

The Korean car maker has also shown two concept electric cars - the EV3 small SUV and a saloon called the EV4.

And it has revealed that it is planning an even smaller EV2 model which could be on the road by 2027.

The announcements were made in Korea where Ho Sung Song, Kia's president and CEO, said: "We will meet customer expectations by offering a full line-up of EVs at various price points and improve charging infrastructure availability.

"As a sustainable mobility solutions provider, Kia's transition to electric vehicles is a must, not an option."

With prices starting from around £25,000, the company said it was planning to achieve an annual sales target of one million electric vehicles by 2026, increasing to 1.6 million units per year by 2030.

The EV5 is slated for launch in 2024 and looks much like a smaller version of the large EV9 which is due to be released in the UK before the end of 2023.

It sits on the same platform as the EV6 and although powertrain options are still to be announced for Britan the EV5 will be sold in China first where it will be available with either a 64kWh or a 88kWh battery.

Range is said to be in the region of more than 330 miles for the smaller battery and up to almost 450 miles for the longer-range model which will also be offered with four-wheel drive.

The EV5 is around the same size as the current Kia Sportage and is likely to be priced from around £40,000 with its UK debut expected in the next year.

"The EV market is expanding from one catering to the smaller early-adopter group to a broader mass majority of customers," said Spencer Cho, head of Kia's global business planning sub-division.

"As a leader in the great EV transition, we have quickly expanded our EV line-up beyond the EV6 and EV9 to include a variety of small- and medium-sized models such as the EV5. Our competitive, growing EV line-up will accelerate the popularisation of electric vehicles and provide consumers with more options from which to choose."

Inside, the EV 5 has a panoramic display panel which incorporates a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a similarly sized infotainment display as well as a five-inch climate control panel.

Further details about British specification versions will be revealed later but Kia confirmer the EV5 would also be available as a GT that offers further performance features.

The EV3 and EV4 were both revealed as concepts showing a smaller but chunkier SUV with the EV3 and a sleek looking four-door saloon in the EV4.
