THE second open-top performance model from Mercedes-AMG is on the way with the announcement that a CLE 53 Cabriolet will be joining the line-up alongside the new SL roadster.
Powered by a six-cylinder inline 3.0-litre hybrid engine developing 442bhp it has a new chassis set up with an AMG nine-speed automatic transmission that uses both a torque converter and wet-clutch for maximum start up performance.
Accelertation is rated at 4.4 seconds 0 to 62mph and that can be reduced to 4.2 seconds if specified with AMG's Dynamic Plus package with maximums of 155mph or 174mph respectively.
Rear-wheel steering is standard and the CLE 53 Cabriolet is fitted with Mercedes' AirScarf system and a fabric hood that can be opened at speeds up to 30mph.
Boot capacity ranges from 385 to 295 litres - the latter with the roof folded.
The car has the same wide-bodied stance as the CLE 53 coupe and comes with five drive modes as well as all-wheel-drive and rear-axle steering.
Prices are still to be announced but can be expected to be slightly more than the £73,075 of the coupe.
