THE wraps have come off the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the sixth generation of the Bavarian car maker's executive estate will be available as an all-electric vehicle.
The i5 Touring will be joined by a 530e plug-in hybrid model which is due to join the range by the middle of 2024.
Two versions of the i5 Touring will be available - an eDrive40 priced from £69,945 and a performance-oriented M60 costing from £99,995.
The 530e is priced from £59,455 and has a zero emission range of up to 60 miles when fully charged.
The i5 eDrive40 has a range of up to 348 miles while the i5 M60 can manage a best of 314 miles on a full charge.
With its motor developing 340hp the eDrive 40 can accelerate 0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds and tops out at 120mph while the M60 is rated at a brisk 3.9 seconds and 143mph.
Figures for the 530e are 6.4 seconds and 137mph while BMW is claiming a theoretical fuel economy of 403mpg for the PHEV with emissions as low as 16g/km.
At 5.06 metres long the new 5 Series Touring is 97mm longer than its predecessor and it is also slightly wider and taller with a wheelbase of 2.995 metres - the longest in its class.
Boot capacity ranges from 570 to 1,700 litres and there is extra space below the boot floor for the luggage net and cover as well as the charging cable for the electrified versions.
Inside, it features the now characteristic BMW Curved Display twin screen layout and what the company calls an interaction bar - a touch strip which runs across the dash controlling the likes of the heating and ventilation system and other key functions.
The new BMW 5 Series Touring will be available in four trim levels in the UK, with the Sport Edition, M Sport, M Sport Pro and range-topping i5 M60.
The Sport Edition specification is being introduced on both the estate and saloon as the entry level to the new 5 Series and features 19-inch wheels, matt aluminium highlights on the exterior and sun protection glass.
