RUGGED off-roader the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is set to return to the UK this autumn - after a 10-year absence.

The durable 4x4 celebrated its 30 birthday last year, and retains that distinctive design that originally set it apart from the pack and attracted a loyal following.

Hardcore off-road credentials allied to everyday practicality have seen the ‘G' notch up more than 200,000 sales worldwide since 1979.

And Mercedes boss Dermot |Kelly said: "Despite G-Class being the longest-serving passenger car series in the history of Mercedes-Benz, we are delighted to welcome it as a ‘new model' in right hand drive for UK customers.

"The long wheelbase version in particular blends style, technology, practicality, impeccable build quality and unbeatable off-road credentials in a shape that is as seductive today as it was when originally launched."

Customers will be able to choose between the G 350 CDI diesel which produces 221bhp and returns 25.7 mpg, and the supercharged G 55 AMG KOMPRESSOR petrol model, which produces 500bhp and can reach 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds.

Both variants will feature standard equipment like automatic transmission with high and low gear ratios; climate control, bi-Xenon headlamps, heated seats with memory, leather upholstery, reverse parking aid and a Harman Kardon Logic 7 Sound system.

There will also be a commercial G 300 CDI Professional, ideal for tough working conditions at inaccessible locations, and available from £57,975.  The G 350 CDI will cost from £79,975 and the G 55 AMG KOMPRESSOR a princely £114,975.

The G-Class is one of a small band of high quality products that has resisted the influences of fashion, and become a trendsetter itself.

It's a low volume vehicle, hand built in Graz and in 1983 won the Paris-Dakar rally to underline its go anywhere capabilities.

Cars will be exclusively available from the Specialist Products Division at Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands.
