Kangoo a cheap

alternative to MPV

Renault Kangoo Trekka, 2006

WHEN we wanted a people carrier years ago, we bought an estate car, but these days, there is a vast number to choose from.

Most are pretty expensive, even second-hand, but a few are based on vans - like the Renault Kangoo - and it makes a great normal-size family transporter.

Even though cheapest models are a bit short on kit, they don't feel like a van to drive.

Prices are down to around £2,300 for early models, and there seem to be quite a few around with very low mileage.

All have power steering and a huge amount of interior space, with storage even above the driver and passengers' heads.

A range of engines starts with a 1.2 75bhp, or a 1.4 with the same power in earlier models. There's also a 1.6 with 95bhp.

Diesels include a slow non-turbo with a lowly 65bhp, and turbo 1.5s with either 68 or 84. There is also a 1.9 turbo with 80.

The lower powered models are comfortable and nippy around town but not so good on long journeys.

Equipment is lowly in the cheapest Authentique but better in Expression and Trekka 4WD models which have all most owners should need.
