Antara a cheaper 4x4

alternative

VAUXHALL'S range was short of a 4x4 after the demise of the Frontera so beloved by second-hand buyers for its cheap prices and good looks.

But the gap was well-filled by the Antara - a good looking 4x4 with the right diesel engine giving great acceleration and very reasonable economy.

It shares all its underpinnings and is built in the same factory as the Chevrolet Captiva which comes out at an almost identical price, so take a look at them both before you buy.

That said, there are a lot more Vauxhall dealers around aren't there.

The engine is well up with most modern oil burners, slightly rattly at start up but smooth and quiet once on the road.

It is too easy to stall on take-off and the revs need to be kept up for best performance, but these are its only foibles.

It is comfortable and reasonably quiet, refined and easy to drive.

The seats have plenty of adjustment and the clutch is light and easy. The gearchange takes some learning but you soon get used to it.
