HOW many Porsche Panameras have you seen knocking around? Not many, I bet.

Just 1,300 of the four-seater grand tourer sports cars have been sold in the UK since its launch in September, 2009.

Butthis will change with the introduction of the new diesel version which is relatively cheaper, but still with stunning performance - and the added bonus of exceptionally low fuel consumption for such a powerful motor.

Porsche itself is confident that the new Panamera Diesel will be attractive to up-market buyers and predicts that around 50 per cent of future Panamera sales will be this version.

The attractions are obvious.

The Panamera Diesel offers a highly appealing driving range of more than 745 miles on one 80-litre tank, emits 172 g/km and delivers a claimed combined fuel economy of 43.5 mpg.

With the optional lower rolling resistance tyres, efficiency improves further still, to 167 g/km and 44.8mpg.

And the newcomer is no slouch compared with its petrol-powered stablemates. Its six-cylinder, 247 bhp 3-litre Ausi turbo diesel engine powers it from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph.

a highly efficient eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox as standard with paddle change as an option.

It's also equipped with an automatic stop/start function which further reduces fuel consumption which is an advantage in city traffic.

I drove the new diesel Panamera is some pretty atrocious weather in the North of Scotland and its handling and ride, even over flooded surfaces, was remarkable for a car of this size.

The steering is nicely weighted, pin sharp, and the suspension ironed out all but the deepest potholes.

Its sharp acceleration is matched by its powerful braking system and behind the wheel I got the feeling I was driving a much smaller sports car.

In sports mode the performance is even better and it makes for easy, safe overtaking.

Porsche engineers have also made the sound of the diesel attractive with a nice throaty roar from a modified exhaust, and as far as on-road noise is concerned the new car is a smooth runner with little road or engine noise, especially for a diesel.

Every Panamera, including the new diesel model, has a high level of standard specification that includes leather interior, bi-xenon headlights, front and rear park assist, Porsche Communication Management with touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, cruise control and a three year warranty.

The interior of the big Porsche is first class with only the highest quality materials being used and the fit and finish is up with the best.

As far as driving position is concerned there are numerous electronic settings available at the touch of a button and all the instruments and switches are easily accessible.

Rear seats are adequate for smaller adults but a bit tight on leg and head room if you're over six feet.

One down side is a pretty poor view out the rear window which can make parking and reversing a tad more difficult.

The Panamera Diesel, which has just gone on sale, will set you back a basic £59,746.

When you think that the top range Panamera Turbo S comes in at a whopping £122,623 this addition to the range is a relative bargain.

I'm sure you'll be seeing more Panameras on the road soon - mainly with diesel power.
