THERE was a time when Fiat's cars were cheaper than the average but had suspect reliability. Not any more.

The Bravo came out in 2007, replacing the unloved Stilo, and my sources in the trade tell me there have been no real problems with it at all.

I've just been sampling the 1.4 turbo MultiAir and it's a cracker, with excellent performance more akin to a hot hatch than a family saloon.

The engine is hugely willing and the performance great fun, but it also comes with stop/start to help excellent economy and low emissions.

The engine sounds lovely and acceleration is good away from rest and in the gears for overtaking.

The road holding and handling are brilliant, with loads of grip and a top quality poised and balanced feel.

The ride is lumpy in town at slow speeds like so many other cars, but smoothes out very well at a faster pace, even on country road with a poor surface.

The high-sided hip-hugging seats are excellent but the sides are soft so don't make it difficult getting in and out.
