CITROEN has never been backward in coming forward when it comes to design.
Over the years there have been some howlers and some truly inspired masterpieces, so when a new model is in the wings we wait with anticipation.
But fear not, for the DS4 is pure quality with impressive good looks, a great performance record and top notch wizardry throughout.
Although the DS4 is roughly based on the C4, it certainly boasts its own identity with eye-catching lines.
This model was supplied in Babylon Red which meant it stood out in any crowded car park.
Attention-grabbing features include 18-inch alloys, tinted side windows and tailgate, twin tailpipes, chrome window surrounds, body-coloured door mirrors and handles and rear door handles that sit flush to the bodywork giving a smoother effect.
The interior is beautifully designed and there are creature comforts at every turn. The aluminium pedals give the DS4 a sporty feel and the performance itself reinforces that theory.
Comfort levels are very good even for back seat passengers who are treated to plenty of leg, head and elbow space.
The generously sized boot can cater for all luggage requirements and that capacity can be increased further thanks to split folding rear seats.
And the on-board technology cannot fail to impress with dual-zone digital air con, a great sound system with CD player and six speaker surround sound, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic lights and windscreen wipers and plenty more besides.
Fitted with a 2.0-litre, diesel-powered engine, the DS4 is a true pleasure to drive as it smoothly accelerates from 0-62mph in just 9.3 seconds and has a top speed of 132mph.
There is an abundance of power and torque at your disposal which means overtaking is never a problem.
The all-round handling is difficult to fault with very low cabin noise and excellent road-holding even in slippery conditions.
The brakes were a little sharp initially, but that's a very minor gripe really.
Citroen has packed a comprehensive list of safety features into the DS4, including anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, intelligent traction control, numerous airbags and lots more.
All in all, the Citroen DS4 is quite a car and it certainly stands out for all the right reasons.
