THERE are some cars that just grow and grow on you, despite what could be perceived drawbacks.

Subaru's big estate/SUV/crossover/offroader/tourer, call it what you like, is a case in point.

For 2011, Subaru expanded the line-up, adding two new 2.0i ES Nav petrol models with prices starting at £21,995.

There are now seven versions of the Legacy Tourer, with a choice of diesel or petrol engines and four trim/equipment levels.

Subuaru says that each model is so comprehensively equipped that the only factory-fitted option will be special paint finishes, priced at £480.

It is a big boldly designed motor that is comprehensively equipped and offers something different.

With a 2.5-litre petrol engine, it would appear to be a very thirsty beast with high CO2 emissions and largely plastic trim and fittings for a hefty price.

You would probably think it could not compare with competitors. Well that proved itself wrong in a number of ways.

The latest model in the range the ES Nav offers that comprehensive list of standard equipment, including, you've guessed it, satellite navigation that begin to make the asking price seem pretty reasonable compared to some much more expensive competitors where the equipment levels would cost many thousands more.

It offers full colour touch screen SatNav and standard equipment that includes alloy wheels, powered driver's seat, cruise control, front, side and curtain airbags and front fog lamps.

All models also feature cruise control, multi-function leather steering wheel, dual-zone, fully automatic air-conditioning; a premium audio system with six speakers; automatic lights and wipers and a powered driver's seat. The audio system is MP3 compatible and a Bluetooth hands-free system is fitted as standard.

Fair enough the Boxer engine would never produce diesel-like economy, but the on-board computer was registering a creditable 31mpg, given the fact that this is a big, four wheel drive vehicle.

And while the plastics don't compare with the quality of some competitors in the price brackets, this is a functional car, equally at home with a big family or as a practical workhorse on the farm or lugging loads around as a business vehicle. A more robust interior is vital in certain circumstances.

It certainly gave a relative, soon to change his existing four wheel drive vehicle, food for thought. He was impressed by the masses of head, leg and elbow room, excellent driving position and good all round vision.

Also impressive was the power from the tried and tested flat four Boxer engine, allied to Subaru's Lineartrnoci CVT gearbox, which is better than most I have tried recently, feeling more like a conventional automatic gearbox.

There may be better looking vehicles around, but the Subaru definitely has a presence with its large eliptical headlights, power scoops and huge front and rear doors as well as its high ground clearance.

At  nearly five metres long this not only allows for brilliant legroom for all occupants, but also a massive boot area of 526 litres, which grows to 1,726 litres with seats folded.

The boot also featured clever hidden compartments to hide valuables and a spare wheel wellthat contains a tyre repair kit, which frees up further space.

It is also a tall car, so headroom is good.

On the road, the car is an able performer with the engine delivering buckets of power. The ride is on the firm side, but not so much as to make life too uncomfortable.

As well as the comprehensive list of goodies, safety equipment is top notch with the car earning five stars from the  EuroNCAP crash safety programme.
