THAT pioneer of city cars, the smart, may face stiff challenges from competing small models but it is still as individual and competitive as ever due to its amazing design and street presence.

The smart fortwo coupe is exactly what it says on the tin - a roomy little pod for two with limited luggage space.

Around the town there is little that can touch it for personal transport, being one of the easiest cars on the road to park.

On the motorway it has always scored a 'could do better' mark, mainly due to the lags between gear changes on the automatic transmission setting.

But smart, part of the Mercedes-Benz concern, makes up for it all with some style treatments which keep the smart flag flying high as an automotive fashion statement.

One of the recent limited editions, was the Boxfresh - just 55 were made - produced in conjunction with the streetwear label of that name.

The smart BRABUS tailor made service enabled the Boxfresh creative team to handpick bespoke features, including colours, textures and finishes.

The result is a design which clearly embodies the Boxfresh style, with sleek black body panel covers and a vibrant 'on-trend' leather interior.

With Boxfresh badges and a distinctive plate on the glovebox, it becomes a smart collector's car automatically.

Powered by the 999cc three-cylinder in-line 71bhp smart petrol engine the car featured BRABUS Xclusive titanium headlights, 15-inch BRABUS Monoblock VII alloys, heated seats and LED daytime running lights.

The 55 cars, exclusive to the UK cost £11,700 each and have a very stealthy look which blends well with the individualistic smart design.

It is all part of the smart's constant programme of evolution which has been under way since the design was launched in 2007.

Of course the smart is not for everyone and it has its critics. But you have to admit that its solid structure and quality engineering give it that certain something that others may lack.
