Sleek Celica

reliable and fun

Toyota Celica, action

IF there is one thing you get with a Toyota it is reliability and that's just as true of their sportscars as their family hatches.

The Celica coupe built between 1999 and 2006 is capable of huge mileages without a problem and is now down to very low money.

There are two engine options with the same 1.8 multi-valve engine, but while the lower powered unit produces 140bhp, the top model has an extra 50 - and not a turbocharger in sight.

The lower power output is quite enough, giving good acceleration from any speed but only as long as the revs are kept up.

The 190 is much quicker, but develops its power at manic revs and so must be pushed towards the red line much of the time.

Both are smooth and quiet but with enough noise to keep the driver informed and they drive the front wheels through a standard six speed gearbox.

All are comfortable, handle well and are very easy to drive.

These are stylish cars in standard spec, with a wide range of equipment including aircon, remote locking and electric windows and mirrors, 190bhp versions get leather and alloys as standard.

There are three option packs - premium, sport and dynamic. Premium adds leather and sunroof, sport has bigger alloys and dynamic adds spoiler, side skirts and alloys.
