TOYOTA is setting the city car pace with the launch of what it claims will be the first full hybrid model in its segment when it goes on sale later this year.

Based on projected official testing figures, the new Toyota Aygo X Hybrid is expected to boast the lowest CO emissions of any non-plug-in car on the market with expected class-leadingtailpipe emissions of 86g/km meaning that it will comply with current low-emission zone requirements.

The full hybrid powertrain - which replaces the current one-litre petrol unit - also brings a performance boost with overall system power output increased by 43bhp compared to the previous non-hybrid version, reaching a maximum of 114bhp and enabling 0-62mph acceleration in less than 10 seconds.

The transition has been no easy task, however, and adapting the Aygo X to accommodate the hybrid components while preserving the car's 2,430mm wheelbase and boot space has required some innovative packaging from Toyota's engineers and designers.

For the first time in a Toyota hybrid, the two stacks of battery cells are positioned alongside each other across the width of the floor in a longitudinal lay-out beneath the rear seats. Other Toyota hybrids use a parallel configuration, which requires a longer space. Smart packaging also sees the auxiliary battery moved under the load compartment, avoiding any loss of storage capacity.

To accommodate the larger hybrid powertrain, the front overhang has been extended by 76mm, achieved through packaging optimisation while preserving the Aygo X's original proportions.

But those aren't the only changes. Toyota claims that the Hybrid is quieter and has a smoother ride thanks to new noise-damping components, including dash silencers, bonnet insulation and an engine underbody cover, combined with an updated exhaust system and silencer.

Further noise reduction measures are featured on higher grade models, including thicker window glass and additional soundproofing throughout the body.

There's an all-new front-end design with a new bonnet, headlights and grille creating a stronger stance and the impression of a low centre of gravity. The look is enhanced by 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, depending on trim level, and black, flared wheel arches.

Interior design has been refreshed with a new seven-inch digital display and heater control panel while an electronic parking brake comes as standard on all versions, as do two USB-C charging ports.

Toyota says that the new Hybrid will come with a comprehensive safety and driver assistance package including an enhanced pre-collision system, lane trace and road sign assist features, as well as a new emergency driving stop system and proactive driving assist. Over-the-air software updates will be available for the first time on an Aygo X, ensuring safety systems are optimised.

Full details of UK-spec models will be revealed nearer to the Hybrid's launch towards the end of the year, but it is known that, for the first time, a GR Sport version is on the cards, bringing a more engaging drive and a sportier look. As well as sportier interior and exterior trim highlights, features will include dedicated tuning of the shock absorbers, coil springs and electric power steering.
