SPORTS utility vehicles seem to be getting more compact with improved driving dynamics and plenty of extra kit.

The Audi Q3 is a perfect example. Long gone are the days when SUV simply meant big, cumbersome, gas-guzzling people-movers.

The stylish Q3 is an instant attention-grabber with its rugged stance, smooth lines, tinted windows with chrome trim, sweeping headlights, body-coloured door mirrors, handles and bumpers, along with the dazzling Glacier White paintwork that could possibly be seen from the moon.

The interior is pure premium class as one has come to expect from Audi. The black fine Nappa leather seats can be heated and creature comforts are plentiful, including a DAB radio, a multi-media sound system with BOSE speakers, sat nav via a colour display screen, LED interior lights, dual-zone climate control and plenty more besides.

There are subtle reminders that this particular Q3 is a little bit special with the S line emblem embossed into the seat backs and also on the bottom of the sports steering wheel.

Occupants have plenty of space and the generously-sized boot can accommodate all luggage requirements. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats mean extra storage room can be found if needed.

The driver has a high seated position which results in excellent all-round visibility and with Audi's Drive Select feature there is a choice of driving modes - comfort, auto, dynamic and efficiency.

Efficiency produces the most economical results and dynamic is ideal for an edgier, more responsive performance.

The 2.0-litre diesel-powered engine provides ample get-up-and-go and the acceleration through the six-speed manual transmission is nice and smooth.

Despite its size, the Q3 proved exceptionally agile and was very nimble when confronted with twisting, windy lanes.

Then, out on the motorways, it easily kept pace with faster-moving traffic and that great all-round visibility is a real bonus.

The Q3 comes with a comprehensive range of safety specifications and Audi's quattro four-wheel-drive technology which means you can tackle all driving conditions with ease.

There is a real sense of style about the Q3. Admittedly it's not cheap and there are other models available that are considerably less pricey.

Nevertheless the build quality, top-of-the-range materials, on-board technology and pure handling capabilities make the Q3 stand out in a highly competitive part of the market.
