WHEN I heard that Audi had launched a five door hatchback version of the sleek A5 coupe I wondered why.

Development costs most have been huge - and probably for pretty small sales - so why did they bother?

Having driven one of these Sportbacks however, I'd be delighted to own one when the Lotto coughs up the cash!

In quattro four wheel drive set up with a 2.0-litre 208bhp petrol engine, it is a superb driver's machine, while remaining supremely quiet and refined.

The roadholding and handling are magnificent, with the most amazing levels of grip on wet or dry roads, and the extra security of all wheel drive for snow and ice.

This S line had the £1,480 optional seven speed automatic gearbox with sports mode and change paddles behind the steering wheel, but great though it was, Audi's manuals are brilliant.

The ride is comfortable over all but the worst surfaces, although bumps and ripples do get through perhaps more than they should at speed.

Inside it is pure class, with leather upholstery, a sophisticated and well-designed dash and a high level of standard equipment.

But the low roofline does mean you have to mind your head when entering, both in the front and in the rear.
