CROSSOVER models are continuing to grow in popularity and one of the more capable examples comes from Suzuki in the shape of the SX4.

The car is available in two and four-wheel-drive configurations and the 1.6-litre petrol version is currently the only 4x4 available on the Motability scheme with nil advance payment.

Not only can it average more than 40mpg it is also roomy inside and has a decent sized boot.

There is the option of an automatic gearbox and with good ground clearance it is surprisingly capable in poor conditions.

Large door openings make for easy access and the rear seats can fold to create extra space. Maximum cargo capacity is more than 1,000 litres which is almost in the estate car league.

The rear seats are set slightly higher, which means passengers in the back get a good all-round view.

The cabin is well insulated with wind and road noise minimal and on the road the SX4 drives well exhibiting some sharp handling.

Inside, the trim is hard wearing and the cabin looks well put together and robust - as does the entire car.

For a relatively small car the driving seat is in a commanding position and visibility from the car is above average.

While the four-wheel drive version offers better safety in adverse weather, the two-wheel-drive models are slightly more economical with Suzuki claiming a fuel return of 45.6mpg.

At the moment Suzuki has 21 models on the Motability programme which require no advance payments.

Metallic paint can be had as an option on all models without extra charge.

There are also a number of offers running until September which see the advance payment on the SX4 automatic in mid-range SZ4 trim reduced to £299 from £499.

The two-litre diesel SX4 DDiS, which is even more economical and can average more than 50mpg, is currently available from £1,399 while the advance payment on the Swift Sport hatchback is down £100 to £899.
