BMW has lifted the lid on its new M4 Convertible, just months after the dynamic duo of M3 Saloon and M4 Coupe models made their debut in Detroit.

The newcomer, with three-part metal roof, costs from £60,730.

The fifth-generation high-performance open-top car of its kind from the company's M division, it is powered by the same twin-turbo 431bhp six-cylinder engine as the M3 and M4.

Not only does it exceed the rev range figure recorded by the outgoing M3 by roughly 40 per cent, it also manages a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent.

Official figures see the convertible capable of hitting 62mph in 4.6 seconds - or 4.4 seconds with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission - with a Governed 155mph top speed. Combined fuel economy is 31.0mpg (32.5 auto).

The £2,645 optional DCT transmission combines two gearboxes, each with its own clutch, and gear shifting can be fully automatic or via steering column-mounted paddles.

Drivelogic allows the driver to choose more sporting or more comfort-oriented shifting programmes while in auto mode, and DCT also incorporates Launch Control to ensure the fastest-possible acceleration from standstill.

Standard kit, in addition to Adaptive M suspension and 19-inch M light alloy wheels, will include the BMW Professional media package, upgraded Bluetooth and USB, front and rear Park Distance Control, folding exterior mirrors and heated front seats.
