THE way to find out which car is going to be best value second hand is to check out their retained value.

Because of its deserved popularity new, the 2010-on Ford C-MAX is good buy second time around and they are also very accomplished and fun to drive.

There are plenty of 1.6 petrol models about and good discounts new mean that they come fairly cheap but if you can afford it, go for the very frugal 1.6 diesel.

Other petrol engines are a 1.0-litre turbo with 99 or 123bhp, and 1.6 with 103, 123 and 147bhp. As well as the 1.6 diesel, there's also a 2.0-litre with 138 or 160bhp.

There is decent acceleration even in 1.6 form and better still in the 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesel turbo versions, which are, of course, more economical.

Diesels are more sought after and expensive so the gain in mpg takes a long time to get back compared to buying a petrol.

They all ride very comfortably and have brilliant road holding with safe and sure handling.

The C-MAX has airbags on all sides, air conditioning, electronic stability control, remote double locking, alarm and much more kit.

The driving position is very good, the seats comfortable and build quality is excellent.

The trade rates them highly for reliability - but only with full service history - so make sure you get it.
