RENAULT has completed the renewal of its LCV line-up with the launch of an all-new Trafic van and an updated Master which go on sale in the UK in September.

Now being built in France rather than at a Nissan plant in Spain, the new Trafic is even bigger, making it more comfortable and practical than ever.

More than 70 variants will be available in the UK taking in panel and crew vans, platform cab and passenger versions.

It is being offered in three trim levels - Business, Business+ and Sport - and there is a choice of four engines.

Renault UK says the entry level Business model is like to be the biggest seller and it features a left-side loading door, reach and rake steering wheel, adjustable driver's seat, electric windows, heated door mirrors, space wheel, remote central locking, hill start, an advanced traction control system, DAB radio with USB, all as standard equipment.

A more modern dashboard has been introduced which would not be out of place in a passenger car and it includes a centre console which houses the new multimedia system and climate control switches.

The new Trafic's cabin provides total storage capacity of 90 litres. There are 14 bins, trays and cubbies of different forms and sizes. They are designed to house the everyday items employed by business users, including water bottles, cans, cups, mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, pens, hard hats, boxes, etc.

Renault says the cabin has been designed to serve as an office as well, and there are cradles for mobile phones and tablets, plus a fold down work surface on a seat back where a laptop computer can be used.

The front and rear overhangs have been extended by 10cm and 11cm and maximum load lengths of 3.75m and 4.15m for the L1 and L2 versions establish a new benchmark for the market.

Engines for the new Trafic are 1.6-litre diesels, in either single or twin-turbo, with power ranging from 115bhp, 120bhp and 140bhp on every model. A fuel-saving stop-start system is standard on the Energy dCi 120 and dCi 140 engines.

Renault claim fuel economy has been increased by 5 per cent across the single turbo range and say you can expect around 48mpg on a combined run. Emissions come in at 149 g/km on the Energy dCi 120 passenger version.

As far as the driving experience goes I found the Trafic very car-like, with minimum road noise even on rough surfaces, and its suspension soaks up bumps and potholes exceptionally well for a van.

Trafic Panel Van basic prices start from £18,245. Crew Van starts from £20,395 and Platform Cab from £20,195.

The main changes to the revised Master Van range are to be found under the bonnet. There are now four to choose from - dCi 110, 125, 135 and 165.

There are improvements to both power output and fuel efficiency due to the introduction of twin turbo technology to the Master range.

Active safety gear has been increased, featuring hill start assist, trailer swing assist, rollover prevention and grip Xtend systems.

Cabin comfort, like the new Trafic, has been uprated for the driver and crew with new seating, increased legroom and higher quality fittings.

Prices for the latest Master have yet to be announced.
