MAZDA'S 3 model has undergone a transformation with a bang up to date model range which not only embodies the latest thinking in technology but is a showcase for the company's new thinking in style.

The 2.0-litre 120PS Sport Nav auto certainly put over the fact that it was something special because apart from its 121mph performance capability and undoubtedly excellent build quality, it has a look all of its own with sweeping lines and a long bonnet.

It is part of a 36-strong third-generation Maxda3 range of hatchbacks and fastbacks which arrived in the UK in January and which have been turning heads ever since.

A hatchback which is big on space, comfort and silent running, the car was powered by one of the range's most popular engine options the 1,998cc SKYACTIV petrol engine which was well-suited to the company's six-speed automatic transmission.

A lively car with a 0-62mph sprint of 10.4 seconds, the car belied its powerful attributes with a Combined economy readout of 50.4mpg which is impressive for a petrol-powered car of this size.

Much of the credit for this is due to the infusion of the lightweight and advanced SKYACTIV technologies.

The 120PS engine is just one of the petrol and diesel choices in the range and delivers a smooth and very silent flow of power bringing a distinctly premium feel to this hatch, which costs £21,395.

The SE-L model on which the Sport Nav is based is already well equipped but the test car also included features such as lane departure warning, high beam control, rear vehicle monitoring and adaptive front lighting.

There was also a power operated driver's seat, digital speedometer, head up display and Bose sound system with Mazda satnav on a seven-inch colour touch screen.

With its combination of sleek proportions and low-slung stance, the new Mazda3 propels Mazda's award-wining KODO - Soul of Motion design theme on to a dynamic new level.

But most of all the Sport Nav is delightful to drive with the lightweight body synching perfectly with the latest Mazda chassis engineering to create an involved, yet relaxing driving experience.

Much of this dramatic weight-saving is due to the increase in the proportion of high-tensile and ultra-high tensile steels in the all-new Mazda3's bodyshell from 50 to 60 per cent to create a strong and impact resistant structure.

The result is a 31 per cent increase in torsional rigidity for the hatchback and 28 per cent for the Fastback, an exceptionally stable platform for the car's steering, suspension and brakes which have all been engineered for optimal driving engagement.

Every all-new Mazda3 will come with smart city brake support (SCBS) which helps to reduce or prevent low-speed collisions by automatically applying the brakes if the driver fails to act, the i-stop stop/start system, and hill hold assist (HHA) to prevent roll back on inclines.

This car is a definite indicator to the premium car capability and future of Mazda.
