DIESELS are getting smoother by the month as new engines are introduced by car makers all trying to outdo each other.

MG's 1.9-litre is one of the smoothest on the market and it also has excellent performance.

I had the chance to drive it recently and, while that is not enough to really get to know a car, I was very impressed by its range of abilities.

As well as the very good performance, which gives safe overtaking speeds in the gears, the engine will allow very low speeds in higher gears and pull away without a murmer.

It also picks up well from low revs - much better than some diesels from other makers.

The ride is excellent - over some roughish country roads and lanes - yet the handling and road holding are also brilliant, with tremendous grip and a finely balanced chassis.

There's a lovely weighty feeling from the steering at speed, but it is light and easy when parking just as it should be.

There's big legroom front and rear, plus a huge boot and split folding rear seats in the five door hatch.

Equipment is very good across the range and the only downside I can see is lower economy than others in the class and higher emissions.
