SKODA is hoping for a Rapid return on its new Spaceback model.

With a host of eye-catching exterior paint jobs the model doesn't lack for kerb appeal while the punchy 1.4 TSI petrol engine and wide boot opening are other major plus points.

Sitting between the Skoda Fabia supermini and Octavia family hatchback, the Rapid Spaceback takes its exterior styling cues from the conventional Rapid model until the hatchback shape kicks in at the rear.

The car I drove was fitted with a £1,100 Style Pack which includes a fixed panoramic glass roof and extended tailgate glass that brings the rear window down to the top of the recess for the number plate.

The extra cash also secures black door mirrors, rear lights that wrap around the sides of the car with a darkened black finish, as well as a rear spoiler. It is money well spent if you want a motor that's a cut above the standard version.

The interior is spacious and thus passenger-friendly while the boot is big when compared to its compact family hatchback competitors. The luggage area is also low and wide making it easy to handle bulky items. If more room is needed the rear seats fold over although they don't create a flat floor.

A covered storage compartment is situated between the driver and front seat passenger doubling as an armrest. It keeps valuables out of the way of prying eyes but tends to get in the way of the handbrake. It can be flipped up out of the way but then all your valuables fall to one end.

The centre console also features a storage box and in general there are plenty of cubby holes for a family's odds and ends.

A pleasant airy atmosphere is guaranteed by the climate control air conditioning while the door mirrors are electrically heated and adjustable.

The instrument panel is well laid out giving all the key driving data and a seven-speed DSG gearbox combines the advantages of manual and automatic transmissions.

When you pull away the first thing you will notice is the ride - which is pretty firm. I found it easy to live with and it offers advantages when it comes to the Spaceback's handling which is sharp.

There is also plenty of grip and the car feels settled - whether it be on the motorway or a country lane.

The 1.4-litre petrol offers plenty of power - allowing 62mph to be reached from a standing start in a shade over nine seconds - and it is reasonably frugal with fuel.

The stylish leather four-spoke steering wheel comes with controls for the radio and your mobile phone and is easy to get comfortable behind thanks to adjustment for reach and rake as well as a height-adjustable driver's seat.
