New Clubman's a
space invader
MINI is continuing to expand its model range with the world premiere of the new Clubman at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of a mid-autumn launch.
The model marks the brand's first entry into the premium compact area of the new car market and combines increased interior space with the latest technology.
The largest of the company's new generation of cars, the Clubman is 27cms longer and slightly wider than the MINI five-door while its wheelbase is 10cms longer.
And its luggage compartment volume of 360 litres can be extended to 1,250 litres by folding down the rear backrest with its optional 40:20:40 split.
MINI says the new car will offer the highest level of everyday practicality, refinement over long distances, versatility and ride comfort ever seen in one of its models.
Features appearing for the first time include an electric parking brake, eight-speed Steptronic gearbox - available as an option depending on model - electrical seat adjustment plus the option of MINI Yours interior styles with backlit door bezels.
There's also the MINI Excitement Package, standard on all UK models, comprising LED interior and ambient lighting as well as a projection of the MINI logo onto the ground from the exterior mirror on the driver's side when the car is opened and closed.
Another new feature is the Comfort Access option including hands free opening of the split doors at the rear.
The engine line-up includes the 192bhp 4-cylinder petrol unit in the Cooper S Clubman boasting average fuel economy of 45.6mpg while the Cooper Clubman version is powered by a 136bhp 3-cylinder petrol engine with 55.4mpg.
And a new diesel unit in the Cooper D Clubman comes in the shape of a 150bhp 4-cylinder engine, with 68.9mpg.
The Frankfurt show will also herald the new 190bhp Cooper SD engine variant for the first time.
