Audi R8 V10 goes
topless
AUDI'S R8 supercar is going topless with a new roadster version of the high powered V10 model.
The new 197mph R8 Spyder makes its debut at the New York Auto Show this week and will become available to order in the UK later this spring.
It comes with a lightweight cloth hood that tapers into two fins which stretch the material flush with the car and can open or close electronically in 20 seconds at speeds up to 31mph.
Powered by a mid-mounted 5.2-litre engine, the Spyder can scorch from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, while enhancements like a new freewheeling mode, in which the R8 coasts with the engine decoupled, boost fuel efficiency by ten per cent compared with the previous Spyder.
It means the 540PS flyer has the potential to return up to 24.1mpg, with CO2 emissions of 277g/km.
And buyers can expect a distinctive engine soundtrack - which can be ramped up even higher thanks to an optional sport exhaust system with gloss black tailpipes.
Transmission is via a seven-speed S tronic gearbox and Audi's driveselect system offers four modes ranging from dynamic to comfort, while three further driving programmes are available for dry, wet or snow conditions.
As in a racing car, the driver can control everything from the new sport or performance leather steering wheel and standard features include satellite buttons for starting and stopping the engine, and for the driving dynamics set-up.
First deliveries are expected towards the end of the year.
